“Any person irrespective of citizenship, ethnic origin, residency, political views and religion can be a fellow of the Club. Club fellowship can be either individual or common. Any citizen of Russia, a foreign country or stateless person can be a Club trustee. The Club is governed by an annual general meeting. The club President is elected from among Club members for two years”; these are the basic regulations of the Club Charter.
The image, style and activity of the Club were largely influenced by the outstanding personality of Nikita Alekseevich Tolstoy (1917-1994), Professor of the St. Petersburg University and first President of the Club. His high cultural level, spirituality, talent for communication, kindness and decency laid the foundation for Club traditions.
Academician Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev, a “guardian of national culture” and one of the first Club members, played a special part in forming the Club. His life and the high moral standards of his creative activities are a special tuning fork for the Club’s work. “It is culture that people need. Not even civilization but culture” – these words of Academician became aphoristic.
The Club was founded and survived in hard times for Russian culture. This was the desert of its fellows, and particularly of its continuous Chairman Valentina Trofimovna Orlova, and two club presidents. The interests of the city coincided with club projects, historicity of its traditions and the style of its activity.
At present, the President of the World Club of Petersburgers is Mikhail Piotrovsky, the Director of the State Hermitage.
